Bernice Boikanyo has always had a searing passion for music, it is this passion that started him on the path he finds himself today. As a young man Bernice began working at EMI/CCP Music, it was here where Mr Schlochberg (CEO of EMI/CCP), recognized the tenacity and live music articulation that Boikanyo harboured, released him from his job and sent him back to music school.
Boikanyo’s career was further developed at Fuba Music Academy and then at Funda Art School where he earned himself a music diploma. He then further established himself as a professional artist by studying music business with Phakamani Music Industry Institute. Boikanyo is thus a well rounded musician who understands both the artistic and business sectors of music. He has also shared a lot his gift, experience and knowledge by imparting skills through teaching students at different schools.
Boikanyo’s complex sound as a drummer has established him as a very strong jazz influence in the South African music industry and he is best known for his accompaniment to many great musicians. His reach has been both local and international as he has shared stages with the likes of Stimela, Vusi Khumalo, Gito Baloyi, Mcoy Mrubata, Pappa Wemba amongst many others. Boikanyo has also been fortunate enough to grace stages at festivals like the North Sea Jazz Festival in Holland. Bernice Boikanyo has become a successful artist who has blended his own rhythms and given meaning and shape to melodies that are illustrated in his debut album MY Soul. Many years of preparation has finally given way to an album that demonstrates growth, maturity and absolute master musicianship, as an energetic drummer who leaves no space for failure. Boikanyo is currently a drummer for the KGB Band, an in-house band for Late Night With Kgomotso on SABC 2 (Saturdays). he is constantly working on projects with a range of artists who all have a hand in the constant bettering of a fantastic jazz musician.
